Coming to Los Angeles with a bunch of euros that I will have to exchange into dollars.

There is no way around this and I won't be able to use an atm, etc. I will be near Hollywood and Beverly Hills and will have a car so can go anywhere to get a fair deal. I would exchange the Euros at a BANK not a currency exchange office in Europe.

Rates are plainly displayed or go to the Bank's website. There are a dozen major banks in BH, BofA, Wells, US Bank, Union, HSBC, City National, etc. I'd go to their website and check rates. But depending on when you bought them, I might sit on them six months or more and see where the rates go.

They are their lowest point in 12 months right now. How much money are you talking about? If it's a couple of hundred dollars or less and you plan to return to Europe in the next year or so, it might pay to keep the money in Euros rather than pay to convert it twice.

Banks are best, but not every branch of every major bank handles currency exchange - check websites for details. And it's always best to call ahead, as at some branches, there's just one person who does exchange and you want to make sure they're there when you arrive. Wells Fargo and Bank of America are your best bets, but of course, they'll tack on a percentage. I agree that this isn't the best time to be exchanging Euros - this is the time to be buying them!

Alas, there is still a lot of problems with the European Union, Greece especially. There is still a good chance the Euro will keep dropping.

Once again, the US Dollar has some serious issues attached to it currently, especially with the debt issue. One comments about banks, they charge fees, especially for "non"-customers, so for a visitor, a exchange house sometimes is a better deal. I don't think you can compare 'street vendors' in turkey with currency exchange businesses in L.

Bottom line, compare the rates and fees.
